1099 (Worsley) Squadron is part of the
Air Cadet Organisation (ACO).
The ACO is a national youth
organisation for young men and women aged 13 - 20. It is made up of two
sections:- the Air Training Corps and the Combined Cadet Force (RAF). Worsley
Squadron belongs to the Air Training Corps Branch.
The Air Training Corps has 6 Regions. Each Region has control of several Wings. Each Wing commands several Squadrons. 1099 Squadron along with 36 other Squadrons, belong to Greater Manchester Wing. Greater Manchester Wing is one of 5 Wings in North Region. Cadets meet every Wednesday & Friday evening from 7 - 10pm at our Headquarters on Highfield Road, Little Hulton. You can visit the squadron any time and at any age but you must be 13 to join. We accept older individuals but you must join before your 18th birthday. The upper age limit to leave is 20. The current Squadron Commander is Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell (whom ex-cadets and staff may remember as ‘Sam Kelly’ who joined as a cadet in 1984!). The Squadron has several dedicated training staff, from Civilian Instructors to adult Non-Commissioned Staff and Officers in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Training Branch. In addition to the training staff there is the Civilian Welfare Committee, who meet on average every 6 - 8 weeks. The Squadron starts at 7.15pm with first parade. A register is taken and Cadets are informed of their various duties for the evening. There is a canteen break, where refreshments can be purchased. At 9.15pm there is a general tidy up, followed by final parade. On final parade, future events are discussed and any awards formally presented. The Squadron is split up into two Flights. This encourages competition on the Squadron and leads to selection of Cadets for Wing events. Cadets can progress and represent Wing at Regional level. There are many weekend activities that are also available. Cadet nights will consist of introduction and training in a variety of academic subjects, drill, outdoor activities, etc.
